My Love Life (First Heart Break)

Joy was gone and I was again lonely.  One morning in late August, while going to the kitchen for some much needed coffee, I ran into Elaine in the hall.  Her eyes were just slits as she searched for her morning caffeine fix.  I escorted her to the kitchen and helped her with the coffee.  While sharing coffee at the kitchen table she explained that she spent the night with my sister after they got in very late from a party.  Her eyes were now open revealing big almond shaped brown eyes which I felt were looking straight inside me.  I knew I had to get to know her and asked her out for that evening.  We clicked immediately and spent the rest of the summer together.  Our love was slow and gentle yet very passionate.  I felt complete for the first time.
Elaine left for a college in September.  It was close to where I was going to school and we were able to see each other every weekend plus an occasional mid-week rendezvous.   In mid-October, she called to say that she needed to study for mid-terms and would stay at the college that weekend.  I agreed to not bother her and let her study with the promise that we would see each other the next weekend.  She didn’t call me all week.  On the following Friday night, I called her house believing she would be there.  Her mother told me that she was staying at school again this weekend.  I called her dorm but got no answer.  I drove the hour drive up wondering but hopeful that we could spend the weekend together.  She wasn’t in her dorm room but one of the girls said that everyone was at the football game.  I got to the game and searched around.  Some of her friends pointed me to where she was sitting.  I hurried to where they pointed, eager to see her.
What I saw crushed me.  She was sitting with this big brawny guy who had her in a close embrace.  She saw me standing there, walked up to me, took my hand and pulled me out to the parking lot.  She looked at me briefly but then glanced away.  Every time she started to say something, she’d stop after a few syllables.  After a few minutes, seemed like forever to me, she said, “I’m sorry but I’ve found someone” and then walked away.  I can’t tell you what I might have said or where I went that evening.  Nothing mattered to me.  My mind was numb and I simply existed.
I heard they were married over the Christmas break.
